Welcome and “Fit Like!”
A warm welcome to our community council web site. Here you will find information about Whitehills & District Community Council, who we are, where we are, what we do and how you can have a voice in local affairs. We shall also tell you a little about our lovely area.
Whitehills is a traditional fishing village, located two miles west of Banff and four miles east of Portsoy on the Banffshire coast of northeast Scotland. The District surrounding Whitehills is a mix of farmland and scattered hamlets, including Boyndie, Inverboyndie . . . Due to it’s sheltered location on a picturesque bay under Knock Head the historical coastal village of Whitehills provided an ideal base for a prosperous fishing industry from as early as the 1700s. A downturn in the fishing industry means that these days the harbour, which is now an award-winning marina, plays host to yachts and pleasure craft as opposed to the yawls and scaffies of days gone by. These days the main industries of Whitehills & District are agriculture and tourism. The open location of the former RAF Banff air base at Boyndie is now home to a state-of-the-art windfarm, which provides both a focal point from the District, but also a community development fund, linked to the electrical generating capacity of the turbines.
There is a wealth of accommodation and things to do in the area: cafes, shops, pubs, restaurants, marina, watersports, visitor and genealogy centres, art galleries, museums, walking, wildlife and bird watching, boat trips, fly and sea fishing, events . . .
